Don’t feel like tomato and olive oil for breakfast? Feel like something a little sweeter and more decadent? Well, here you have it, the ultimate in decadence – churros y chocolate. Once the staple of Spanish shepherds, now it’s a big favourite throughout the Hispanic world and rapidly gaining popularity further afield. Churros are a bit like doughnuts but deep fried in olive oil and piped into long spirals through a star shaped nozzle.
At mid morning there is a line up at the market churros stand. Made on the spot, they are sold piping hot in a paper cone. Unlike doughnuts however, they are light and crispy on the outside but meltingly soft inside. You can eat them just as they are, sprinkled with sugar, or take them to a nearby cafe and order some chocolate for dipping.
But not to worry if you miss the breakfast rush. Churros can be eaten anytime in Spain. Snack on them with your afternoon coffee while y0u watch the world go by, or find them at almost any fiesta until late into the warm Spanish night. They are never too far away.

Great photos Sharon. Only one comment I would make is that there’s not enough emphasis on the chocolate. In fact one hardly ever gets given a decent chocolate when you order your churros, just a pathetic little sachet of insipid cocoa powder. So any suggestions from you as to the best place or best way to make it would be much appreciated. I’ve only had a decent chocolate but with porras once and that was in Madrid. It was at a market again. The chocolate was dark and hardly sweetened but you could almost stand your spoon/churros/porras up in it! xxx

Hi Jude,well isn’t that the way with just about everything these days! I totally get what you are saying. Where they probably used to serve them with thick pure coca now they buy sachets in Macro. arghhh like the tortillas I wrote about it my last post. It breaks my heart to see how fast we are losing all these good simple things. Soon no one will even remember what they used to be like. Sad, sad, sad……
